RECONSTRUCTION OF MY PARENTS OVEN

Since my parents built their oven over 20 years ago it has had a lot of use and hence some wear and tear. Here are a few pictures of their oven being reconstructed, the retaining walls were kept in place while the dome and chimney were torn down. The hearth was also replaced.

The new hearth is set in place dry, no mortar was used and the first row of fire bricks for the dome  are mocked up.

Right the first two rows of fire bricks are laid down dry, with no mortar.

Working on the dome and door to the oven.

Form is set in place for the door arch and dome is being built free hand, sides are filled with dirt as dome goes up.

A form for the dome was made by placing wet sand on a wooden board supported by milk crates. The sand was shaped into a dome and the bricks were put in place. The dome was then clad in mortar.

Looking down on the dome you can see the chimney being formed and the front of the finished oven

Finished oven is fired.
